The College Council would like to thank Clare MacDermott for her work to create a consistent approach to teaching and learning. The whole school Teaching & Learning Plan incorporates 10 High Impact Teaching Strategies that the staff have had input into, as well as 10 Essential Skills for Classroom Management.

The College Council and Executive have also met to embark on the new Strategic Plan process and further information and opportunities to be involved will be communicated later in the year.

We have welcomed the lifting of restrictions this term and it is a pleasure to finally see all the Secondary students now attending assembly and chapel and the smiling faces behind the twitching masks. New students into Secondary school are now well established and have developed some solid friendships and more importantly, good work habits. As we approach the end of term, all Secondary students need to ensure they remain focused and capitalise on their hard work through their assignments and examinations.

Progress reports will be sent out soon and we are looking forward to discussing students' development with parents in the weeks ahead.

With the current world and national events unfolding we have been working hard to remain focused on student outcomes and reassuring students by providing a familiar and safe learning environment.

Term 2 Uniform Reminder

撸撸视频 is proud of its image in the community and an important part of this continues to be our uniform. I am very pleased to see that the students are taking pride in our appearance this year and I would like to say thank you for all the parental support of our policy. Apart from student safety, the image we project in our community has many positive benefits both at school and in the wider community.

Enrolment forms formalise the agreement between the school, parents and students to uphold the expectations of our uniform and behaviour standards.

Term 2 requires Secondary students to wear a tie, so a timely bedroom tidy might be in order over the Easter break to locate any missing items. A reminder that students are only allowed piercings in the lower lobe (plain metal stud or sleeper), facial piercings are not allowed. Parents and students are reminded to review our  and clarify any questions with staff before decisions are made that are in breach of this. The aim is to make sure our expectations are clear so that it is not necessary for students to be suspended for uniform infringements. Parental support with this is essential and very much appreciated so that we can continue to deliver a quality education whilst being consistent with our expectations of all students.

Students considering any appearance changes through the holidays need to be aware that any haircuts, colouring and piercings need to fall within our acceptable standards. Any unhealed piercing will need to be removed at the start of Term 2 and any colouring corrected to a natural tone. Students and parents are reminded that no haircut should be shorter than 6mm (No.2). Students are aware of the expectation and any decisions to ignore this will be regarded as defiance and suspension will be considered.

Year 11 and 12 students have been working on their SET plans and QCE progress data in Pastoral Care lessons to make sure they are in suitable classes and working towards successfully achieving their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

After one term, students on contract need to seriously consider their initial subject choices if they continue to have difficulty in certain subject areas.

Pastoral Care staff are experienced and well placed to offer students and families good advice and alternatives to current subject pathways.

Study Skills, Learner Types, Learning Environments and QCE Scenarios have been some of the topics covered in Pastoral Care to support their studies this term.

Year 10 have now established their QCE learning accounts and are set to start accumulating credits towards their QCE. The Pastoral Care team have been working through the initialising of SET (Secondary Education & Training) Plans and have been asked to share their currently identified strengths, career ambitions and interests with parents at home to begin the process of transition towards graduation, further study and employment.

The 2022 program supporting our no mobile phone use during the day from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm continues to gain pace. Apart from the benefit of cyber safety while at school this is improving students鈥� concentration, learning and wellbeing as they are encouraged to socialise, eat well and participate in a range of recess activities organised by student leaders and staff. A number of afterschool activities are also available but need parental permission through the .

Parents also need to consider these factors at home to support a good study environment, promote sufficient sleep, encourage a balanced approach to exercise and diet and manage excessive use of social media and gaming.

Recycling, planting and pruning continue to beautify the school grounds with more varieties going in around the campus. Students have been working hard, rain or shine, to dig holes, fertilise and water the new plants with the considerable help and guidance of supervising teaching staff. A recent batch of Desert Roses has been introduced in one area to cope with the more challenging conditions that have prevented regular plants from thriving.

The recent rain has allowed our planted 2021 barrier beds on the oval to thrive but as most of us are experiencing at home the weeds are also enjoying the good conditions for growth. Weeding is on the cards!

Students keen to help with environmental initiatives, recycling and maintaining vegetation have an opportunity to log these hours towards our 撸撸视频 Service Awards and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

We continue to raise funds for this group through the Containers for Change Scheme and families are encouraged to drop off uncontaminated recyclable bottles and cans at the College (Pink drop-off area near the ITD building) or donate directly through selecting our School Donation Account Code at the recycling stations in Cairns (CODE C10419915).

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of all students who completed Year 12 in 2021. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.

Between March and June, all our students who completed Year 12 last year can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician鈥檚 Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

The end of the term is already upon us, and as we look back, we have a great many things to be thankful for.

Our amazing staff have been foundational in ensuring that this term has run so smoothly. A big thank you to our teachers for being so willing to fill in spaces that appeared in the timetable during their release time and for being so supportive of our new relief teachers.

The learning assistants also deserve a big shout out for being so flexible at supporting in classrooms, going where they were needed, and often coming in on their days off to relieve the pressure on teachers.

Everyone has been brilliant at stepping up and taking on extra duties and supporting our community in any way they could. Thank you!

This collaborative effort has meant that we have been able to keep all classes functioning as separate year levels and that we have been able to operate a full timetable throughout the term.

Harmony Day is an event that is very close to our hearts as we celebrate the importance of diversity, and recognise how we can grow and learn by respecting and sharing our varied backgrounds, experiences and cultures. Although our Global Village event has had to be postponed due to COVID this year, our teachers still found ways to make the day special. Each year level found a way to celebrate the unique multicultural aspect of our school and address our core values of peace, excellence, respect and community. Here is a little snapshot of our Harmony Day week within the classrooms.

Preps

Preps invited Mrs Arlene Coates in to talk about Hopevale, her home as a little girl. She told stories about what it was like to grow up as an indigenous child and also highlighted the similarities she shares with the students. The students then decorated a hand and made a harmony tree out of them.

Year 1

Year 1 discussed the meaning of Harmony Day, and how their families originated from places all over the globe. They were very excited to welcome a new student to their class on Harmony Day, so they created a Welcome Book and then pooled their talents to collaboratively colour a Harmony Day banner.

Year 2

Year 2 learned about France and got to showcase their creative talents. Students and teachers painted their own versions of water lilies and Japanese bridges in the style of Claude Monet. During his lifetime Monet painted around 250 oil paintings that show various aspects of his water garden in Giverny. Very talented Year 2!

Year 3

Year 3 celebrated Harmony Day by learning about the country of Wales and their celebrations, flag and food. They made a "bookmark dragon" as the dragon is on the Welsh flag.

Year 4

Year 4 visited Germany where they learnt how to say the days of the week in German. They also joined the Bremen Town Musicians, serenading the surrounding classes with their harmonious animal calls!

Year 5

The students worked together to complete a Dove symbol with the focus words Respect, Responsibility, Grateful, Empathy, Forgiveness and Self Control in acknowledgement of Harmony Day. In order to broaden their understanding of each other, they intentionally worked with people with who they were not within their usual friendship group, and who they did not normally work with.

Year 6

Year 6 began making a harmony tree in our classroom, decorating hands with flags and information about the different cultures and heritages in our classroom to celebrate our diversity.

This term we have been using our Assembly and Chapel time to extend our understanding of how we can work well, and play well together. This was put into practice by some Year 3 students who were getting very creative and working together in the playground to build 3D objects out of hula hoops. They worked really well as a team and were very persistent. Great teamwork girls!

Within Christian Studies, Year 5 have been exploring the structure and meaning of prayer. They approached this with reverence, and their prayers show how their thoughts are toward others.

Our professional team of qualified Early Learning Educators have really enjoyed their time with our kindy children for the start of the 2022 year. Our Early Childhood Teachers, Barb and Odie have ensured our kindergarten's educational program is beneficial for all of our children. And they are supported by our Early Learning Educators, Cecile, Yoko and Nat, our Educational Leader, Anna, and our new Trainee, Kira, who support the kindergarten's daily routine and program.

Our energetic and caring team ensure the needs and education of all our children are met in a supportive and engaging way.

About Us

Our extended hour Kindergarten is located on the College grounds, operating from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, 48 weeks of the year. We are fortunate to have two large rooms and a large outdoor environment so we can run two Kindergarten programs for children in the year before they start school.

Our Kindy rooms are led by qualified Early Childhood Teachers who have had many years of experience in the early years field and spend time getting to know their children and families. Our Kindy program focuses on learning through play, giving children the social skills and confidence they need to lead into school and a head start into early literacy and numeracy learning.

Our College Connection

The Kindy children have the opportunity to attend the College's Library, Chapel services and events. These experiences help the children to build relationships with Pastor Adam and the OSHC Service Leader and they also visit the Prep classes in Term 4 to support the smooth transition into school.

Please contact me if you have a child who is turning 4 by the end of June this year or next year. We have limited places available and may be able to assist you with placement. I look forward to discussing your child鈥檚 entry into Kindergarten.

During the term, we have had some avian friends visit the 撸撸视频 Centre. Because the 撸撸视频 Centre is often open, little birds come and sit on the lights and wires and even nest near the entrance. And it is not uncommon to see birds flying through during a chapel or an assembly. Although this means there is some cleaning up to do from time to time, it is nice to see the birds around the school.

It is also a reminder of Jesus鈥� teaching in the book of Matthew. Jesus makes it clear to the crowd gathered around him that God cares for His creation. He provides food for the birds and water for the grass and flowers. Jesus tells us that the birds and the flowers have nothing to worry about, because of the great love of God for them. Jesus also asks that we think about the fact that God considers us of greater value than even the birds and the flowers.

In our society today, we worry too much. For humans, it comes naturally. We don鈥檛 have to try to worry; we just do it. Sometimes it is sickness (or in today鈥檚 world, fear of sickness), paying the bills, lack of companionship, or one鈥檚 appearance. The question is, if God doesn鈥檛 hesitate to feed and care for the birds, then why wouldn鈥檛 God care for us? The Bible tells us that God has a specific plan for each one of us. God knows what鈥檚 going to happen in the future. Knowing this, why wouldn鈥檛 we put all our worries aside and trust in Him?

When we come to realize how much God truly cares for us, and we see that God is at work in our lives, our worries and fears become smaller and God鈥檚 love and care frees us to focus on serving others. If you worry a lot, or even if you think you鈥檙e not worth taking care of, do some bird-watching. Look at how well your heavenly Father takes care of them, and remind yourself that He will take care of you too. And 鈥楪ive all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you鈥�. (1 Peter 5:7).

It is a blessing that since restrictions and density limits were eased from March 4^th we have been able to have Chapel in the 撸撸视频 Centre with all classes in attendance. It is a joy to hear the Primary school students singing together and watch them dance during the action songs, and to have the Secondary students begin their Wednesdays together with encouraging words from Scripture. We have also welcomed the Kindergarten to Primary school Chapel this year.

Pastor Greg from Trinity Lutheran Church is also a regular guest at Primary school Chapel and has led Chapel once for Primary school during the term.

This year the Easter weekend falls at the end of the term break, just before the start of Term 2. Many people traditionally spend Easter with family and friends, and this year many people are able to travel due to the easing of restrictions and opening of state borders. We pray for God鈥檚 protection on those travelling, and that we all may enjoy some rest during these holidays.

For Christians, Easter is a time to proclaim and celebrate the crux of our faith 鈥� the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for our salvation. This is the Gospel, the Good News, that brings forgiveness and salvation for all who believe.

Families of the College are invited to join members of Trinity Lutheran Church for worship on the Easter weekend. Easter Services at Trinity Lutheran Church, on Severin Street in Manunda, are:

If your child is displaying signs of anxiety or school refusal, please contact your child鈥檚 Head of House.

Let鈥檚 be honest, we鈥檝e all had those days where we would rather not go to work. Perhaps we just need an extra-long lie-in or some sofa time. Maybe the conditions are so perfect, that a day on the water is too irresistible to pass up. It鈥檚 normal for our students to have these days once in a while too, but when they become more and more frequent and they are coupled with distress, we need to get curious, find out the cause and take preventative action. Letting young people stay home when they present in distress may be a short-term band-aid but it isn鈥檛 a long-term cure.

A pattern of missed days can have a huge impact on student wellbeing and learning. Here are a few examples:

• Lack of connection with friends and teachers can lead to feelings of isolation and guilt
  This in turn can make it harder for young people to return as they become anxious as to what people will think, or questions they may be asked.
• Lack of routine can make it harder to re-establish one
  Consider how hard it is to get back into exercise after a long break. Our brains function well with routine and habit; the longer the break in routine, the harder it can be to re-establish.
• Feeling overwhelmed 鈥� a cycle kicks in
  The longer students are off, the more work they miss and the more overwhelmed they can become. Anxious thoughts take over as students begin to contemplate all the work they may need to catch up, especially assessment. This can then flick the fight, flight, freeze switch, leading to avoidance strategies and further time off school.

While you may not think a day here or there makes much difference to a student鈥檚 learning, the below table highlights quite the opposite.

Common reasons for school refusal include:

1. To avoid school-related stimuli or situations that cause general distress and features of anxiety or depression such as sensory overload, physiological symptoms (sore tummy) or to avoid an event (e.g. test) or a person (teacher).

2. To escape uncomfortable peer interactions and/or performance situations (e.g. issues with peers, sports days, or oral presentations).

3. To receive attention from significant others outside of school (e.g. a family member).

4. To pursue something tangible and appealing outside of school (e.g. sleeping late, watching TV, hanging with friends, or engaging in antisocial behaviour or substance use) (Kearney, 2002).

Getting a child back to school often requires a team approach with families and school staff working together. If your child is beginning to request days off school, it鈥檚 vital we intervene early. If you notice the signs, please get in touch with your child鈥檚 Head of House.

Intervention strategies include:

1. Listening to the student to understand if there are specific stimuli or situations acting as triggers.
2. Discussing approaches and strategies that are supportive but do not allow the student to completely avoid the situation 鈥� avoidance does not build resilience and is a temporary solution.
3. Making staying at home, less appealing than going to school. Removing access to things like social media, TV etc.
4. Following daily routines as though at school. Getting up at the normal time, dressing in school uniform and working from home on subjects while following the normal daily timetable.
5. Adopting an adjusted timetable with daily/weekly goals.

Returning after the holidays

If you know your child has anxiety around school, it鈥檚 likely the end of the holidays will begin to trigger back-to-school nerves. Here are some suggestions from Youngminds.org.uk to help minimise stress:

• Chat about school in your ordinary everyday conversations as the holidays come to an end. Keep it light and keep it positive.
• Ask how they鈥檙e feeling about it and whatever they tell you, accept, validate and normalise their feelings, e.g. "You鈥檙e right, it is a bit nerve-wracking on your first day back 鈥� same for me and work. I bet there are 30 other kids in your class feeling exactly the same."
• Plan a few interesting things to do in the evenings and at weekends in the next term to give them something to look forward to and remind them that school is only a part of their week.
• Establish a routine 鈥榝amily feedback鈥� time where everyone can air and share worries from their day, as well as the fun things that went on. This could happen over dinner time and involve questions like, "What was the silliest moment of your day? What was the most interesting fact you learned today? Did anyone say anything kind or mean?鈥� Have a look at more of our conversation starters below for ways you can encourage your child to talk about how they鈥檙e feeling.
• Teach them some simple breathing/grounding techniques and exercises to use at school if they feel anxious during the day.

A fun, educational and interactive program discussing period pain, pelvic pain and endometriosis. The program offers the latest in modern knowledge and the new neuroscience of pain. It plays a critical role in informing and educating people to recognise and identify when symptoms are abnormal, simple ways to improve these symptoms, and how and where to look for further help.

Well, it has been a very busy and successful term in sport at 撸撸视频, with our Swimming Carnival, CISSA competition and numerous students representing both the College and TCN.

CISSA

It has been a relatively positive start for several of our CISSA teams this season. Our results have been promising with four wins against Trinity Bay State High School, three wins and a draw against St Andrew鈥檚 Catholic College, six wins against Woree State High School and four wins and a draw against Redlynch State College.

Each round consists of 10 games, so our performances are something to be proud of. Our scheduled fixtures against Cairns State High School were postponed until next term due to the recent wet weather.

CISSA recommences in Week 2 next term with an away game against St Monica鈥檚 and St Augustine鈥檚.

TCN

A number of our students have represented TCN this term in Rugby League, Basketball, Touch Football, Soccer, Rugby Union and Basketball. Congratulations to all the students who have either trialled for TCN or were selected for TCN. A special mention must also go to Caylen Hunter, who has been selected in the Peninsula Under 15 Boys Rugby League team. Caylen will travel to the Gold Coast next term to play in the state championships. Congratulations Caylen and all the very best.

More TCN trials are occurring next term, so I encourage your child to please keep an ear out for morning notices, announcements on assembly or to visit the Sports Noticeboard, located near the Tuckshop.

Our Swimming Carnival, the first in two years, was held at the Marlin Coast Swimming Pool on Friday, 4^th March. We were blessed with great weather and both the students and staff had a fantastic time.

Congratulations to all students who participated and to our year champions.

Well done and congratulations to Green Eagles, who were the winning House.

Due to the shortened term and the recent weather (both hot and wet), the Secondary school Cross Country will now take place on Wednesday, 20^th April (Term 2, Week 1) between 12:55 pm and 3:00 pm.

The weather smiled upon us with bright sunshine, blue skies and moderate temperatures, for what was our first sporting event of the year. It was fantastic to have spectators and supporters back on school grounds to cheer on all the participants of Primary school Cross Country. The determination and perseverance shown by all the children were superb. I am hoping all those who ran enjoyed the fun atmosphere with the encouragement from the crowd, music throughout their races and support and assistance from our Secondary school peers. I am certainly looking forward to future events.

I would like to thank all the Preps for their efforts and bravery. Running the first race is never easy and they did so with aplomb. Though our Prep race was one of inclusion and about the excitement of being in their first House event, I would like to acknowledge Texas, Violet, Soeyu, Ari, Liam and Namane for their wonderful efforts.

Thank you to all the families that supported our Easter Book Fair. We are currently finalising the Fair and will update families in the next newsletter.

A big thank you to Miss Marcelle and all of our students who helped decorate our Learning Centre. It just gets better and better. We are truly blessed to have such talented staff and students at our school!

We have had a very creative, inclusive and wonderful first term at 撸撸视频 Lutheran OSHC. Following our NQS framework, the service has focused on Quality Area 3: Physical Environment and Quality Area 5: Building Relationships With Children. In these two areas we have successfully achieved and are still continuing to support the following:

• Outdoor and indoor spaces are organised and adapted to support every child's participation and to engage every child in quality experiences in both built and natural environments.
• Resources, materials and equipment allow for multiple uses, are sufficient in number, and enable every child to engage in play-based learning.
• The service cares for the environment and supports children to become environmentally responsible.
• Responsive and meaningful interactions build trusting relationships that engage and support each child to feel secure, confident and included.
• Children are supported to collaborate, learn from and help each other.

To support this, the children have participated in a range of projects, activities and community events. Such as:

• 40 days of Lent: This included activities and discussions on Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and the days leading up to Lent. Children contributed in Lent promises, prayer and giving to others.
• Harmony Day: Children were awarded certificates of acknowledgement for who they are. We celebrated Harmony Day by making rainbow cookies, crafting activities, creating a 鈥渨here we are from鈥� poster and having discussions on what makes us unique.
• Indoor program: There has been a lot of 3D art projects, Mobilo creations, origami, imaginative play, clay sculptures, block buildings and more child-initiated activities supported in our indoor environment.
• Outdoor program: When the sun is shining, we definitely know how to make the most of it. With the support of staff, children have been taking the initiative to set up their own play environments suiting their needs. We have had soccer tournaments, gymnastic practices, parachute games, skipping, dance and music games and a quiet reading under the shade of trees.
• Sustainability Projects: Years 4, 5 and 6 have been involved in sustainability projects. The children had to come up with a group project that benefited the environment and supported the service and children. We have started our native flower garden where we welcome all birds, butterflies and bees to enjoy. It is the responsibility of the children to ensure the garden continues to grow and be cared for. We look forward to extending this and seeing more sustainable projects commence.

Our educators use a range of strategies to engage children in activities supporting their emotional, social and physical development. They encourage children to explore, build relationships, problem-solve and be creative. They also recognise spontaneous 鈥榯eachable moments鈥� and use them to build on children鈥檚 experiences.

• Before School Care: 6:30 am - 8:30 am
• After School Care: 2:30 pm - 5:30 pm
• Vacation Care: 7:30 am - 5:30 pm

The Vacation Care program is out! Please ensure you enrol and book your child/ren in as soon as possible.

• Finish date: Friday, 15th April 2022

Due to the delayed school start, we didn't have the opportunity to personally present our 2021 College DUX, Levi Cutler, with his award and celebrate his achievement at this year's leaders ceremony, so Mr and Mrs Cummings travelled to Brisbane on the weekend to catch up with him and see how he was settling into his university studies.

Levi is undertaking a Bachelor of Chemical & Environmental Engineering at the University of Queensland. He said he is really enjoying all the new experiences and opportunities that his new studies are bringing.

Mrs Cummings said, "It was really good to finally see Levi and wish him well on behalf of the school."We wish you every blessing and success for your studies and the future Levi.

The College has a team of dedicated staff who, together, look out for the pastoral care needs of our students. The Student Welfare Officer may provide support to students over a designated period of time, however, if a student requires ongoing and extensive support, the Student Welfare Officer will liaise with external agencies for further assistance as necessary. It should be clarified that the role of our Student Welfare Officer is not one of a 鈥楽chool Counsellor鈥� and that as a College, we are unable to provide ongoing counselling support.

Meeting with the Student Welfare Officer is via appointment or in emergency situations as the need arises. Our preferred referral process is for parents to please make contact with their child鈥檚 Home Group or Classroom Teacher as the initial point of contact. This allows us to consider ways we can best provide appropriate support as a school.

There are a number of community organisations we would recommend as services that may be able to assist you further:
